Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are becoming prevalent in healthcare due to the increasing availability of both structured and unstructured healthcare related data. The application of AI in the healthcare industry varies widely and is undergoing enormous changes in terms of patients’ care management, diagnosis of chronic diseases, hospital administration, and clinical decision making. The most common AI tools include deep learning, natural language processing for unstructured data, and machine learning techniques for structured data.

There are several research studies conducted in recent years on the use of AI in disease areas such as cancer, cardiology and neurology. AI has the potential of early detection and diagnosis of chronic diseases, and can offer innovative solutions to reduce the symptoms of these diseases. AI tools can be powerful in the identification of chronic diseases at early stages, thereby enabling patients to receive the treatment on time and thus saving millions of lives.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) as the leading cause of mortality across the globe. CVDs are a group of conditions related to the heart and blood vessels. It is stated on the WHO website that about 17.9 million people lost their lives from CVDs in 2019. Thus, the focus of the research at CodeHand is to apply supervised machine learning algorithms, deep learning, and AI architectures such as convolutional neural networks for cardiovascular disease prediction.
